Widzew travel to Płock for round 2 of the Ekstraklasa on the back of a home draw with Motor Lublin, while Wisła surprised everyone by winning away at European-chasing Raków Częstochowa. On paper that makes Wisła look like the in-form side, but the numbers underneath the result tell a different story, and the market still installs Widzew as favourites at odds of around 2.40.
Why I like it
- Wisła's win over Raków was not built on open play. Both Wisła goals in matchday one came from a set piece and a goalkeeper error rather than a created chance, and Wisła registered the fewest shots of any Ekstraklasa side in round one (just three, though all were on target). That is a shaky platform to build a home win on against a side chasing continental football.
- Wisła's underlying numbers are poor. The club had the seventh-lowest average possession and seventh-lowest pass accuracy in the division after round one, plus the fourth-highest expected goals against (1.43 xGA). A team without the ball and leaking chances is exactly the kind of opponent Widzew's positional attack, drilled over pre-season, should be able to hurt.
- Off-field turmoil at Wisła. The club changed president, sporting director and head coach over the summer. New coach Adam Majewski is still trying to shift the side from a defensive back-three shape to something more offensive, and it is very much a work in progress rather than an established system.
- Widzew's H2H record against this exact opponent is strong. Since Widzew's return to the Ekstraklasa the sides have met four times, with Widzew winning twice and drawing twice — and the most recent meeting in February 2026 was a 2-0 away win for the Łódź side. Widzew have also not lost to Wisła since the 2022/2023 season.
- Wisła are shaky at home, Widzew reasonably solid on the road against them specifically. Wisła have won only 2 of 7 home league matches so far this year, losing the other five. Interestingly, Widzew's sole away win in 2026 also came against this very opponent (that February 2-0 result), suggesting a psychological edge even amid otherwise poor away form.
- Squad boost for Widzew. Steve Kapuadi returns to the squad after the 2026 World Cup and should slot straight back into central defence, while new arrivals Giannis Papanikolaou and Jusuf Gazibegović add fresh depth and competition, even if neither is expected to start from minute one.
The risk
The obvious concern is Widzew's away form, which has been poor to the point of alarming: winless in seven straight away matches across all competitions (five defeats, two draws) heading into this game.
Wisła are also unbeaten in eight matches including pre-season friendlies and will have real belief after beating a European-level Raków side, home advantage in front of roughly 7,500 fans, and a set-piece specialist in Marcin Flis who can change a game on his own from a penalty or free kick.
Still, weighing Wisła's threadbare underlying attacking numbers, their new manager's unproven system, their poor home record this year, and Widzew's clearly superior recent head-to-head record against this specific opponent, the value sits with backing Widzew to get the win at odds of 2.37.
- the bet is won when Widzew will lead with 2 goals or win the match
